In the past, AVEO has partnered with Dr. Jon Atwood of Antioch University New England to operate summer bird-banding stations in Ashuelot River Park and the Keene State College Wildlife Management Area. These banding stations are part of a nationwide research program called Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS). MAPS researchers monitor bird populations at over 500 locations across the country by capturing birds in delicate “mist nets,” recording the birds’ age, sex, and breeding status, and banding them with uniquely-numbered, lightweight metal “bracelets” before releasing them back into the wild. Although AVEO no longer actively participates in the MAPS bird banding project, we do have plenty of photographs & stories from bird banding days of yore in our Bird of the Week feature.
