Executive Director

The Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock, NH is seeking an exceptional Executive Director to take this respected organization to its next level.  The ideal candidate will have educational background and/or experience in environmental education or land conservation, along with the demonstrated management and leadership skills required to oversee an organization with a full and part time staff of 14 and an annual budget of $600,000.

The Harris Center has a 40-year history of outstanding conservation education and land protection work in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire.  Education programs include a ground breaking “naturalist in residence” program for elementary students, field study for middle and high school students, courses for adults, citizen science projects, youth camps, and weekly outings. As a local land trust, the Harris Center owns or holds easements on almost 18,000 acres within its 125 square mile focus area.

Vernal Pool Mapping Internship

AVEO/the Harris Center for Conservation Education seeks a GIS intern for our vernal pool projects.  The intern’s primary responsibility will be using ArcGIS spatial analysis techniques to develop a predictive vernal pool layer for one or more towns in the Monadnock region, based on the template used for the Keene Vernal Pool Project. 

Additional responsibilities may include: incorporating new field data into existing ArcGIS maps for the Keene Vernal Pool Project; updating AVEO’s interactive online map (Google Map API and/or ArcGIS Online map) of documented vernal pools in Keene; updating AVEO’s online map (Google Map API) of amphibian road crossing sites with locations of potential crossings and other embedded data; and conducting fieldwork to ground-truth and document potential vernal pools on public and conserved lands in Keene or Peterborough (fieldwork optional).

Required Skills: working knowledge of spatial analysis & mapping in ArcGIS; interest in exploring the mapping capabilities of the Google Map API and ArcGIS Online; familiarity with using a handheld GPS unit (if you’re interested in conducting vernal pool fieldwork); strong organizational skills & the ability to work independently.

Hours, Schedule & Compensation: approximately 200-300 hours, with a flexible schedule.  Spatial analysis could take place anytime in autumn, winter or early spring.  (The deadline for field maps is late April 2012).  Fieldwork would need to be conducted in late April & May 2012.   A modest stipend is available.
